Doctor of Philosophy in Statistics & Data Science

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Statistics & Data Science at Auburn University prepares students for advanced research and professional leadership in statistical science. The program emphasizes the development of independent, creative research while providing rigorous training in probability, statistical theory and data analysis.

Students may also pursue interdisciplinary collaborations that apply statistical methods to problems across scientific and industrial fields such as physics, biology, finance, engineering and public policy

Areas of Study

Doctoral students in the statistics concentration develop expertise across several areas of statistics and probability. These include statistical inference and theory, probability and stochastic processes, statistical modeling and data analysis, computational statistics and applied statistical methodology.

Students may also pursue interdisciplinary collaborations that apply statistical methods to problems in fields such as science, engineering, data science and public policy.

Program Structure

The PhD program combines advanced coursework, qualifying examinations and original research. Students begin by completing graduate coursework in mathematics and statistics that builds a strong theoretical foundation for advanced statistical study.

As part of the program, students complete three preliminary written examinations covering major areas of study, followed by a general oral examination that evaluates readiness for doctoral research. After selecting a faculty advisor, students develop a dissertation topic and conduct original research under the guidance of their advisory committee.

The program culminates in the preparation of a doctoral dissertation based on independent research and a final oral defense. Throughout the program, students are expected to demonstrate strong scholarly achievement and the ability to conduct independent research in statistics.

Research & Professional Development

Doctoral students participate in seminars, collaborate with faculty and contribute to ongoing research projects in statistics and related quantitative disciplines. Many students present their work at professional conferences and publish their research in scholarly journals during their graduate studies.

These experiences prepare graduates for careers in academia, research institutions and data-driven industries.

Sixty credit hours are required for the PhD degree.
