Facilities to Fuel Innovation & Discovery

The $40 million Sciences Center complex brings together state-of-the-art spaces for learning, research and collaboration. The Sciences Center Auditorium features a 300-seat lecture hall with a striking mosaic and an open atrium ideal for special receptions and events. The adjoining Sciences Center Laboratory is distinguished by its bronze sculptures and serves as a hub for hands-on experimentation and discovery. The Sciences Center Classrooms building houses administrative offices, meeting rooms and multiple instructional spaces, including an Engaged and Active Student Learning (EASL) classroom designed to foster collaboration, discussion and interactive learning.

The STEM + Agricultural Sciences Complex will bring together programs across science, mathematics and agriculture in a modern academic and research environment designed for collaboration.

The approximately 265,000-square-foot complex will include three buildings serving COSAM’s departments of Mathematics and Statistics, Geosciences and Biological Sciences, along with the College of Agriculture’s departments of Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences, Entomology and Plant Pathology, and Horticulture.

The complex will feature flexible wet and dry research laboratories, active-learning classrooms, faculty offices, shared support spaces, pedestrian connections and outdoor teaching areas, including a teaching garden and outdoor classroom. The facility is also being designed with a goal of achieving LEED Silver certification.

For COSAM students and faculty, the STEM + Agricultural Sciences Complex will provide new opportunities for hands-on learning, interdisciplinary research and collaboration across fields that address some of the most important scientific and environmental challenges facing Alabama and beyond.

COSAM’s Engaged and Active Student Learning (EASL) classrooms are designed to foster collaboration, communication and critical thinking. Equipped with interactive technology, flexible seating and shared workspaces, these rooms create a dynamic environment that encourages students to engage directly with course material and each other.

The Sciences Center Auditorium, first opened for use in Fall 2005, serves as a primary lecture hall for large undergraduate courses and university events. With seating for 300 students and modern instructional technology, the auditorium provides a comfortable and engaging environment for teaching, learning and collaboration across the sciences and mathematics.

First opened for use in Fall 2005, the Sciences Center Laboratory houses undergraduate laboratories where students gain hands-on experience conducting experiments across the sciences. The building also includes the Scientific Supply Store, which provides instructional materials and equipment to support coursework and research throughout COSAM.

The Chemistry Building supports instruction and research across multiple areas of chemistry, housing modern teaching and research laboratories, classrooms and faculty offices. The building provides students with access to advanced instrumentation and collaborative learning spaces designed to strengthen laboratory skills and scientific inquiry.

The Edmund C. Leach Science Center is a cornerstone for research and discovery at Auburn University. Spanning 62,500 square feet, it houses the Department of Physics and provides space designed for collaboration and innovation. The facility includes flexible study areas, charging stations and spaces that encourage student–faculty interaction. On the rooftop, a telescope terrace and classroom allow students to remotely control telescope stations for hands-on learning and astronomical observation.

Funchess Hall was built using Amendment V funds approved by the 1957 Alabama Legislature and was dedicated in 1961. A long-standing fixture of Auburn’s campus, Funchess Hall has served generations of students in the sciences.

Built in 1992, the Rouse Life Sciences Building honors Dennis Rouse, former dean of agriculture and director of the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station. The building supports instruction and research in the biological sciences and provides modern laboratories, classrooms and faculty offices for students and researchers in COSAM.

The Biodiversity Learning Center, a 15,000-square-foot facility funded by a $3.5 million bond, serves as the new home for the Auburn University Museum of Natural History. Located between Funchess Hall and Rouse Life Sciences Building, the Center houses hundreds of thousands of specimens representing Alabama’s rich natural heritage and the broader Southeast. Dedicated to research, education and outreach, the facility supports faculty- and student-driven inquiry, K–12 programs, and preservation of biodiversity for our region and beyond.

The Auburn University Museum of Natural History serves as a vital resource for biodiversity research, education and outreach. These collections offer access to specimens that underpin our understanding of species’ diversity, morphology, anatomy, genetics and distribution. The museum’s mission is to preserve and document our region’s natural heritage while advancing natural-history education for students, teachers and the broader public. Its vision is to become a center of excellence for biodiversity research and to be the gateway through which all of society can explore the natural sciences and appreciate the relevance of biodiversity to human health and quality of life.

The Donald E. Davis Arboretum, established in 1963 under the leadership of Donald E. Davis, is a living laboratory of native plants and wildlife. With its open-air pavilion and expansive grounds, the Arboretum serves as an ideal venue for environmental education, field study and outdoor discovery across all ages.
