For more than a century, science and mathematics have shaped Auburn University’s teaching, research and service mission. From Auburn’s earliest courses in chemistry, physics and mathematics to the creation of the College of Sciences and Mathematics in 1986, COSAM’s history reflects a long-standing commitment to discovery, innovation and student success.

Today, COSAM builds on that foundation through nationally recognized research, high-impact learning experiences, outreach programs and academic programs that prepare students for careers in science, mathematics, health, technology and education.

Before COSAM

Science and mathematics were part of Auburn’s academic identity long before COSAM became a college. Early faculty leaders helped establish programs, laboratories and facilities that shaped the university’s growth and expanded Auburn’s role in scientific education and research.

Early Science and Mathematics at Auburn

Auburn’s roots in science and mathematics date back to its founding as East Alabama Male College in 1856. As the institution grew, faculty in chemistry, physics, astronomy and mathematics helped build the academic foundation that would later support Auburn’s emergence as a major research university.

Among these early leaders was William Leroy Broun, who taught chemistry, physics and astronomy and served as university president. Broun strongly advocated for laboratory and vocational instruction, helping establish science as a central part of Auburn’s curriculum.

Other influential figures included Bennet Battle Ross, a chemist and longtime Auburn faculty member who served in several leadership roles; Cliff Hare, a chemistry professor, dean and state chemist whose legacy is also reflected in the name Jordan-Hare Stadium; Fred Allison, founder of Auburn’s Department of Physics; Vann Parker, a leader in mathematics and graduate education; and Charles Saunders, a chemistry alumnus and faculty member who later served as dean of the School of Chemistry.

Their work helped advance science and mathematics at Auburn through periods of major change, including two world wars and the Great Depression. A major milestone came in 1963 with the opening of the Science Center, then the largest construction project in Auburn’s history. The complex included Allison Physics Laboratory, Parker Hall and Saunders Hall, honoring leaders whose contributions helped shape Auburn’s scientific foundation.

The Creation of COSAM

In 1986, Auburn University created the College of Sciences and Mathematics, bringing the physical, biological and mathematical sciences together in one academic college. The new college reflected Auburn’s growing commitment to research, scientific discovery and high-quality instruction in the core disciplines that support many of the university’s academic and professional pathways.

Since its founding, COSAM has grown into one of Auburn’s largest colleges, with five departments: Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Geosciences, Mathematics and Statistics, and Physics. The college continues to support Auburn’s land-grant mission through teaching, research, outreach and service.

Milestones

Fall 2026

STEM + Agricultural Sciences Complex Opens

The STEM + Agricultural Sciences Complex is scheduled to open in fall 2026, bringing together programs across science, mathematics and agriculture in a modern environment designed for teaching, research and collaboration. The approximately 265,000-square-foot complex will support COSAM’s departments of Mathematics and Statistics, Geosciences and Biological Sciences, along with departments in Auburn’s College of Agriculture.

 

2025

First PhD Graduates in Statistics and Data Science

COSAM celebrates the first doctoral graduates from Alabama’s only Ph.D. program in Statistics and Data Science.

 

2023

Ed Thomas Named Dean

Edward “Ed” Thomas Jr. is named dean of the College of Sciences and Mathematics. Under his leadership, COSAM continues to expand its research impact, enhance student learning experiences and strengthen Auburn’s role in scientific discovery.

2021

Record Research Funding and New Genetics Major

COSAM reaches a record research high with $18.2 million in extramural funding. A new genetics major is approved for fall 2021.

2019

Leach Science Center Dedicated

The Edmund C. Leach Science Center is officially dedicated. The 62,500-square-foot facility houses the Department of Physics and provides modern spaces for collaboration, teaching and research, including a rooftop telescope terrace and classroom.

2018

Earth System Science PhD Program Begins

The Department of Geosciences offers a new doctoral program in Earth System Science.

2015

Department of Geosciences Established

The Department of Geology and Geography becomes the Department of Geosciences. COSAM also advances research, outreach and public engagement through projects including CubeSat development, Davis Arboretum improvements and the Auburn University Museum of Natural History’s Junior Curator Camp.

2014

New Spaces for Research and Active Learning

The Magnetized Dusty Plasma Experiment laboratory opens. COSAM also opens an Engaged Active Student Learning classroom in the Sciences Center Classrooms Building, supporting interactive instruction through a flipped classroom model.

2013

Biodiversity Learning Center Opens

The Auburn University Museum of Natural History opens the Biodiversity Learning Center, expanding opportunities for teaching, research and outreach. During its 50th anniversary year, the Davis Arboretum receives Level III accreditation through ArbNet.

2012

COSAM Celebrates 25 Years

COSAM celebrates its 25th anniversary. Additional milestones include the establishment of the Duncan Memorial Lecture, the launch of AubieSat-1 and a National Science Foundation award supporting construction of a magnetized dusty plasma device.

2010

NASA Selects AubieSat-1

NASA selects AubieSat-1 as one of five CubeSats to launch aboard a Delta II rocket.

1986

The College of Sciences and Mathematics is Established

Auburn University creates the College of Sciences and Mathematics, bringing the physical, biological and mathematical sciences together in one academic college. The creation of COSAM reflects Auburn’s growing commitment to research, scientific discovery and high-quality instruction in disciplines that support many of the university’s academic and professional pathways.

1963

Science Center Opens

Auburn opens the Science Center, then the largest construction project in university history. The $3 million, three-building complex included Allison Physics Laboratory, Parker Hall and Saunders Hall, honoring early leaders whose work helped shape Auburn’s foundation in science and mathematics.
