Mathematical Puzzle Program | MaPP

The Mathematics and Problem-Solving Program, known as MaPP, is a team-based academic competition that invites middle and high school students from across Alabama to apply mathematical reasoning, creativity and collaboration to complex, real-world challenges.

Hosted by Auburn University’s College of Sciences and Mathematics, MaPP emphasizes problem solving as a dynamic, shared process. The program reflects how mathematics is used in research, industry and everyday decision-making.

Working in teams, students tackle open-ended problems that reward logical thinking, clear communication and innovative approaches rather than speed alone. MaPP encourages students to stretch beyond standard classroom exercises, build confidence in their mathematical abilities and experience mathematics as an engaging, exploratory discipline.

MaPP features two competitive divisions to support age-appropriate challenge and collaboration: a Junior Division for students in grades 7–8 and a Senior Division for students in grades 9–12. Each school may register up to two teams, with participation limited to ensure a high-quality experience for all competitors.

In addition to the competition, MaPP gives students and educators an opportunity to engage with Auburn University’s campus and the broader COSAM community. Over the years, the program has recognized outstanding teams whose creativity and problem-solving skills exemplify the spirit of MaPP.
