Summer Science Institute | SSI
A free, immersive STEM experience at Auburn University
The Summer Science Institute (SSI) is a free, week-long residential STEM program for outstanding rising 11th and 12th grade students with a strong interest in science and mathematics. Hosted by Auburn University’s College of Sciences and Mathematics, SSI brings talented high school students to campus to explore advanced scientific topics, engage in hands-on research experiences, and live like a college student for a week.
Through close interaction with Auburn University research faculty and graduate students, SSI participants experience science beyond the high school classroom while building friendships with peers who share a passion for discovery.
Program Overview
SSI is designed for motivated students who are eager to deepen their understanding of science and mathematics and explore future STEM pathways.
Eligibility: Rising 11th–12th grade students
Residency: Students residing in Alabama or Georgia
Cost: Free (competitive application required)
Format: Week-long residential program on Auburn University’s campus
Participants engage in interactive lessons, field experiences, and collaborative activities that mirror how science is practiced at the university level.

I genuinely enjoyed every experience. Not only have I learned a myriad of things about science and mathematics, but I learned more about the college application process and how college life is, and met new people.
On the first day of anatomy, I didn’t feel comfortable going near the cadavers, but SSI staff talked to me and made me comfortable in the lab. I was able to overcome a fear and never once felt neglected or ignored during my experience.
SSI was the whole reason I came to Auburn. It introduced me to my major, which led me to my research, and that research led me to graduate school. It changed my life.
