The Interdisciplinary PhD Program in Earth System Science (ESS) prepares students to address complex, coupled Earth system processes using integrated approaches drawn from geology, geography, environmental science, geochemistry, geophysics and spatial analysis. The program emphasizes research excellence, critical thinking and interdisciplinary collaboration to advance understanding of Earth’s dynamic systems.
PhD candidates work closely with faculty mentors to design and conduct original research that contributes to fundamental science and real-world solutions.

Minimum Requirements

Total hours: A minimum of 60 graduate credit hours beyond the bachelor’s degree

Core courses: Emphasis on Earth system science foundations, research design and quantitative methods

Seminars: Participation in departmental and interdisciplinary research seminars

Research credits: Significant credit hours applied to dissertation research
Students may petition to count up to 30 hours of relevant graduate coursework from a completed master’s degree toward the 60-hour requirement, subject to approval by the ESS program coordinator and Graduate School.
A personalized Plan of Study is developed in consultation with the student’s adviser and advisory committee early in the program. The plan ensures that coursework aligns with the student’s research goals and meets university requirements.
Prior to advancing to candidacy, students must pass a comprehensive examination that demonstrates mastery of core Earth system science principles and research readiness.
A significant portion of the PhD degree is devoted to dissertation research conducted under the guidance of the student’s adviser. Upon completion of original research, the student must successfully defend the dissertation before the advisory committee.
