The Department of Geosciences at Auburn University’s College of Sciences and Mathematics studies the Earth and the complex systems that shape it. Our faculty and students investigate Earth materials, surface and subsurface processes, environmental change and the interactions between natural systems and human activity. Through teaching, research and hands-on experience, the department prepares students to address real-world challenges related to resources, hazards and sustainability.

Geosciences is an inherently interdisciplinary field that connects the physical sciences, environmental studies and spatial technologies. At Auburn, students learn to apply scientific principles to understand the planet’s past, analyze present-day conditions and help inform decisions that affect the future.

What Are the Geosciences?

The geosciences focus on understanding the Earth across time and space. Geoscientists ask questions such as how landscapes form, how water and energy move through natural systems, how natural hazards develop and how human activity influences the environment.

At Auburn, geoscience research and instruction span traditional geological sciences as well as modern environmental and geospatial applications. Students gain experience studying rocks, minerals and fossils while also learning to analyze groundwater systems, environmental risk and spatial patterns using tools such as geographic information systems and remote sensing.

Areas of Study

Geology

Geology examines the materials that make up the Earth and the processes that shape it. This includes the study of minerals, rocks, fossils, tectonics and Earth history, as well as applied topics such as natural resources, environmental geology and geologic hazards.

Geography and Environmental Studies

Geography explores patterns and relationships among people, places and environments. This field integrates physical and human perspectives and emphasizes spatial thinking, environmental systems and geospatial technologies such as GIS to better understand natural and social landscapes.

Geoscientists play a critical role in addressing some of today’s most pressing issues. Their work supports environmental stewardship, natural resource management, hazard mitigation and data-driven decision making. From protecting water resources to improving land-use planning and responding to climate-related challenges, geoscience research informs policies and practices that affect communities locally and globally.
