Geosciences Advisory Board

The Geosciences Advisory Board (GAB) connects the Department of Geosciences with experienced professionals in government, industry and community leadership. The board serves as an advocate for students and faculty, offering strategic advice, mentoring, and support to help shape the department’s future.

The advisory board helps the department:

  • strengthen workforce connections by advising on current trends and skills needed in geoscience careers

  • support student success through networking, internships, scholarships and professional development

  • enhance the department’s reputation and impact regionally, nationally and globally

  • champion new opportunities in teaching, research and outreach

The board draws on the expertise of leaders with diverse backgrounds in geology, environmental science, geospatial technology, resource management and related fields.

Why the Advisory Board Matters

The GAB is more than a council — it’s a bridge between classroom learning and real-world geoscience careers. Members volunteer their time and experience to help students gain access to professional networks, learn about industry needs and prepare for meaningful jobs after graduation. Their guidance also helps the department stay responsive to evolving scientific and workforce demands.

Through collaboration with faculty and staff, the board supports initiatives that advance scholarship, enhance experiential learning and expand opportunities for future Auburn geoscientists.

The Geosciences Advisory Board is composed of alumni, industry professionals and community leaders with deep experience in geosciences and related professions. Current leadership includes:

Goodney Hulsey Zapp, Chair
Goodney Zapp is a graduate of Auburn University with a BS in geology. She began her career in field geology and has held leadership roles in energy and technology, currently working as an IT strategy and program delivery consultant. Her interests include supporting women in STEM and advancing opportunities for students.

Herb Martin, Vice Chair

Herb has decades of experience in oil and gas exploration and management, applying technology and strategic thinking to resource evaluation and unconventional plays.

Anne Hall, Secretary
Anne works with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, focusing on water resources and hydrology. Her work includes ensuring sustainable water use and protecting unique natural environments.
