Grants and Scholarships
The Department of Geosciences offers scholarships, travel grants and research grants to support undergraduate and graduate students in geology and geography. These opportunities help students reduce financial barriers, participate in professional development and advance research and field experiences.
How to Apply for Scholarships
Auburn University students must complete a scholarship application through the Auburn University Scholarship Opportunity Manager to be considered for freshman, general and departmental scholarships. Deadlines for incoming and current students are posted on the AUSOM website.

Merkle Family Endowed Scholarship
Robert S. Fousek Scholarship
Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood Endowed Scholarship
Vulcan Materials Company Scholarship
Funded by Vulcan Materials Company to support undergraduate students majoring in geology or geography at Auburn University.
AU Environmental Institute Excellence in Environmental Sciences Scholarship
Gamma Theta Upsilon International Geographic Honor Society Scholarships
Scholarships of $1,000 each awarded to support career or graduate school aspirations in geography. Four awards are available to undergraduate students and one award is available to a graduate student.
Internal Travel Grants
GAB Student Travel Grant
Funded by the Auburn University Geosciences Advisory Board to support travel to academic or professional meetings. Open to undergraduate and graduate students in geology and geography.

Fall: Friday, September 19, 2025
Travel dates: August 15 to December 31
Spring: Friday, January 30, 2026
Travel dates: January 1 to August 14

COSAM Graduate Student Travel Fund
Provides modest support for COSAM graduate students presenting dissertation or thesis research at scientific meetings. Funds are not provided for workshops, research effort or travel to research sites.
AU Graduate School Travel Grant
Supports graduate student travel to academic meetings.

Auburn University Research Grants
GAB Student Research Grant
Funded by the Auburn University Geosciences Advisory Board to offset direct research costs such as equipment, lab supplies, publication costs or travel to field sites or collaborators. This grant does not fund travel to academic or professional meetings. Funds must be spent within the budget year awarded. Open to undergraduate and graduate students.

Gulf Coast Association of Geological Societies
Provides annual grants in aid for graduate students.
American Association of Petroleum Geologists
Grants-in-Aid Program supports graduate research related to petroleum, energy-mineral resources and environmental geology.
L. Austin Weeks Undergraduate Grants provide $500 awards to undergraduate students and student-led geoscience organizations.
Sigma Xi Student Grants-in-Aid
Supports research expenses such as equipment, lab supplies and travel.
Deadlines are March 15 and October 15.
