Services & Support

The Department of Geosciences provides professional services that connect researchers, students and collaborators with advanced instrumentation, analytical expertise and field support. From training and sample preparation to data analysis and collaborative research, our facilities are designed to support projects from concept through publication.

Instrument Access & Scheduling

Researchers may request access to departmental laboratories and equipment through the appropriate facility contact.

  • Orientation and required safety training must be completed before independent use

  • Advance scheduling is required for most instruments

  • High-demand instruments may require consultation prior to booking

Contact the relevant lab manager or facility director to begin.

Training & User Support

Hands-on training is available for faculty, students and collaborators.

  • Instrument-specific instruction

  • Laboratory safety training

  • Field equipment training

  • Ongoing technical assistance during project development

Training ensures safe operation and high-quality data collection.

Sample Preparation Services

Department facilities support preparation of geological and environmental samples, including:

  • Rock crushing, grinding and mineral separation

  • Thin section preparation

  • Powdering and sample splitting

  • Preparation for trace element and isotope analysis

Consult facility staff early to ensure appropriate preparation protocols.

Analytical & Data Support

Our team provides consultation and support for:

  • Geochemical and isotope data processing

  • Microscopy and microprobe data interpretation

  • XRD/XRF and ICP-MS workflows

  • Geospatial and remote sensing data analysis

Staff can assist with quality control, workflow optimization and interpretation.

Field & Geospatial Services

The department supports field-based and geospatial research through:

  • Drone-based mapping and remote sensing

  • LiDAR and surface scanning

  • Geophysical instrumentation

  • Field sampling equipment

These services support applied, environmental and fundamental geoscience research.

Research Collaboration

We welcome collaborations with:

  • Auburn faculty across disciplines

  • External academic institutions

  • Government agencies

  • Industry partners

Collaborations may include shared instrumentation access, joint project development and co-authored research.

Rates, Policies & Service Requests

Instrument use and services may involve cost recovery fees depending on:

  • Instrument time

  • Consumables

  • Level of staff assistance

All users must comply with departmental and university safety policies.

To request services or inquire about rates, contact the Department of Geosciences or the appropriate facility lead.
