Master of Science in Physics | Thesis Option

The Master of Science in Physics (Thesis) program at Auburn University provides advanced training in the fundamental principles of physics while emphasizing original research. The program is designed for students who are interested in developing research experience and preparing for careers in scientific research, industry or further doctoral study.

In addition to building a strong foundation in core areas of physics, students work closely with a faculty advisor within a research group and complete a significant research project that culminates in a master’s thesis.

Areas of Study

Students in the MS (Thesis) program pursue research within the department’s major areas of physics, including atomic, molecular and optical physics, biophysics, condensed matter physics, plasma physics and space physics. These research areas investigate phenomena ranging from atomic-scale interactions and advanced materials to plasma dynamics and the space environment surrounding Earth.

Graduate research projects are conducted within faculty laboratories and frequently involve collaboration with researchers across Auburn University as well as with national and international research partners.

Program Structure

The MS (Thesis) program combines advanced graduate coursework with independent research conducted under the guidance of a faculty advisor. Students complete approximately thirty credit hours of graduate study that include core courses in classical mechanics, electricity and magnetism, quantum mechanics and statistical physics, along with colloquium participation and additional electives.

As students progress through the program, they join a faculty research group and develop a research project under the direction of their major professor and advisory committee. The program culminates in the preparation of a written thesis that presents the results of the student’s original research and a formal oral defense before the committee.

Most students complete the thesis master’s program in approximately three years, including time dedicated to research and thesis preparation.

Research Training

Students in the thesis program gain extensive research experience while working within the department’s active research groups. Training may include laboratory experimentation, computational modeling, data analysis and theoretical work depending on the chosen research area.

Graduate students often present their work at scientific conferences and may publish their findings in peer-reviewed journals. Through this research experience, students develop the analytical, technical and communication skills necessary for careers in physics and related scientific fields.

Career Preparation

The MS (Thesis) program is well suited for students pursuing research-oriented careers or planning to continue to doctoral study. A master’s degree in physics can also support entry-level teaching positions at community colleges and technical institutions as well as research roles in government and industrial laboratories.
