The Department of Physics at Auburn University advances discovery at the frontiers of the physical sciences while preparing students for careers in research, industry, technology and education. Through a combination of rigorous coursework, hands-on laboratory experience and faculty-mentored research, students develop the analytical and problem-solving skills that define the discipline of physics.

From introductory courses to advanced research, the department emphasizes close collaboration between faculty and students. Undergraduate and graduate students work alongside researchers exploring fundamental questions about matter, energy and the universe.

 

Research

Discovery drives the department’s mission. Faculty and students pursue research across modern physics, tackling fundamental scientific questions and real-world technological challenges. Areas of strength include atomic, molecular and optical physics, biophysics, condensed matter physics, plasma physics, space physics and physics education research.

This work spans topics from the behavior of atoms and molecules to Earth’s magnetosphere, advanced materials and plasma systems. Research is highly collaborative, bringing together faculty, postdoctoral researchers, graduate students and undergraduates. Auburn is especially recognized for plasma physics, including research in magnetic fusion, dusty plasmas and plasma interactions relevant to both laboratory and space environments.

Academic Programs

Undergraduate programs

Physics undergraduates build a strong foundation in classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics and statistical physics while gaining extensive laboratory and research experience. The program prepares students for careers in physics, engineering, technology and data-driven fields, as well as graduate or professional study.

Graduate programs

Graduate students pursue advanced coursework and original research through the department’s doctoral program. Students join research groups led by faculty mentors and contribute to projects in areas such as plasma physics, condensed matter physics, atomic physics and space science.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The department conducts research in modern laboratories and research facilities across campus. These facilities support investigations in plasma physics, materials science, atomic physics and other areas of modern physics.

Among the department’s major research facilities is the Compact Toroidal Hybrid device, used to study magnetic confinement and plasma behavior relevant to fusion energy research.

The Department of Physics fosters a collegial and collaborative environment in which students work closely with faculty mentors and research teams. Many faculty members maintain national and international collaborations, providing students with opportunities to contribute to projects that address major scientific and technological challenges.
