Graduate Certificate in Medicinal Chemistry
The Graduate Certificate in Medicinal Chemistry provides specialized training in the chemistry of drug discovery and development. Offered jointly by the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and the Department of Drug Discovery and Development, the program allows graduate students to develop expertise in the design, synthesis and analysis of biologically active molecules.
Medicinal chemistry integrates principles from organic chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology and analytical chemistry to understand how chemical compounds interact with biological systems. Students completing the certificate gain additional credentials and knowledge that can strengthen career opportunities in pharmaceutical research, biotechnology and related fields.
Program Overview
The certificate program provides interdisciplinary training in topics central to modern medicinal chemistry. Coursework explores subjects such as drug mechanisms of action, drug absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination, as well as the design and synthesis of bioactive molecules. Students also study methods for detecting and quantifying biologically active compounds and examine the chemistry of natural products.
Together, these topics provide a strong foundation for understanding how chemical principles support modern pharmaceutical science and drug development.

Students must complete a minimum of 15 credit hours of approved coursework.
