Get Involved with ASEF

The Alabama Science and Engineering Fair (ASEF) gives students across the state the opportunity to explore real-world questions through hands-on scientific and engineering research. From elementary investigations to advanced high school projects, ASEF encourages curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking—skills that form the foundation of lifelong learning and future STEM careers.

Through its College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM), Auburn University proudly supports ASEF by hosting regional and state competitions, mentoring student researchers, and engaging educators, families, and STEM professionals from across Alabama. Whether you are a student preparing your first project, a parent or teacher guiding young scientists, or a volunteer or judge lending your expertise, ASEF is a collaborative effort that depends on a shared commitment to science education.

ASEF is more than a competition — it is a learning experience that connects classrooms to the broader scientific community. Students gain confidence presenting their work, teachers access resources that support inquiry-based instruction, and volunteers and judges play a vital role in encouraging the next generation of innovators.

Only students selected as winners from one of the four approved regional science fairs are eligible to compete in the in-person, state competition at Auburn University.  These students will be required to fill out additional ASEF-specific forms in STEM Wizard.

All Regional Fairs are required to advance their winners to ASEF using the STEM Wizard System immediately after their fair. Project paperwork will be reviewed and approved by the SRC Team and ASEF Director, Dr. Jess Gilpin, jag0038@auburn.edu. Projects that do not receive approval prior to ASEF may not be eligible to compete or receive category and/or special awards.

Students, parents and teachers are encouraged to review all documents below to ensure they are aware of the deadlines, policies and procedures used during the competition. Failure to meet deadlines or criteria may result in the inability to participate or qualify for specific awards.

After ASEF, high school students that were selected for ISEF will need to fill out additional ISEF paperwork.

Additionally, the top 10% of Junior Division winners from grades 6-8 advance to compete in the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge.

If you are interested in judging at ASEF, please contact Dr. Jess Gilpin.  The offical call for judges will be sent out in early spring 2026.

All judges must preregister through STEM Wizard.  To ensure you are well-prepared, ASEF will host an online judges orientation training before the event.
