Short Bio

Lauren Besong is an Auburn, Alabama, native who serves as administrative assistant for Auburn University’s pre-matriculation Rural Medicine Program. The program works in collaboration with the UAB Heersink School of Medicine to help prepare rural students for success in medical school and address the critical need for physicians in rural Alabama.

This mission is especially meaningful to Lauren, whose master’s research focused on identifying health deserts in rural Mississippi through a disability resource lens. Her background in medical anthropology gives her a broad understanding of the medical gaps the Rural Medicine Program seeks to address, including the economic, geographic and social factors that contribute to health disparities.

Outside of work, Lauren enjoys anthropology, traveling, reading and scrapbooking.
