Al Artat Bin Ali

Short Bio

Artat Ali is a PhD student in Earth System Science at Auburn University and a Graduate Research/Teaching Assistant in the Department of Geosciences. His research focuses on geospatial analysis of climate change, heat stress, environmental risk, social vulnerability, and remote sensing applications. He works at the intersection of GIS, GeoAI, spatial modeling, and environmental data science to better understand how climate and human systems interact across space and time. Before joining Auburn, he served as a faculty member in the Department of Geography and Environment at the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh, where he taught courses in remote sensing, geomatic surveying, map interpretation, and physical geography. His work has contributed to research on urban heat islands, flood-contamination risk, air pollution, and environmental change in both the United States and Bangladesh. He is committed to producing applied research that supports resilient communities, informed planning, and environmental decision-making.

Contributes to a research project on urban resilience and social vulnerability related to climate change impacts in Mobile, Alabama. Responsibilities include collecting, processing, and analyzing spatial, environmental, and socio-demographic data, as well as supporting geospatial modeling, mapping, and interpretation of climate-related risks.

Engagement

Artat Ali values public-facing science and community engagement. His outreach work includes heat-risk awareness activities at Auburn University, where he helped educate football tailgaters about heat exposure and mitigation through interactive demonstrations. He has also contributed to STEM engagement as a student organizer for Destination STEM, working with middle school students from rural and underserved communities across Alabama.

Beyond the United States, he has supported environmental risk awareness workshops and air quality monitoring training in Bangladesh, helping communities better understand environmental hazards and practical monitoring methods. His outreach reflects a broader commitment to making geospatial science accessible, useful, and impactful for diverse audiences.

Awards, Leadership, and Professional Service

Artat Ali has received recognition for his academic achievements, research contributions, and professional involvement through competitive awards, fellowships, and conference support. His recent honors include the AAG Regional Development and Planning Specialty Group Ashok K. Dutt Award for Best Graduate Student Paper, as well as travel and research support from Auburn University. Beyond research, he plays an active leadership role as Director of Outreach and Engagement for the AAG Regional Development and Planning Specialty Group, contributing to outreach, professional engagement, and community-building initiatives within the discipline. His service experience also includes supporting student learning, academic events, and collaborative research activities, reflecting a strong commitment to scholarship, leadership, and the advancement of geospatial and environmental sciences.
