About ALNHP
The mission of the Alabama Natural Heritage Program is to provide the best available scientific information on the biological diversity of Alabama to guide conservation action and promote sound stewardship practices.
ALNHP carries out this mission by collecting and managing data about the status and distribution of species and ecosystems of conservation concern.
History
Established by The Nature Conservancy in 1989, the Alabama Natural Heritage Program is part of NatureServe, an international network of natural heritage programs in all 50 states, Canada and Latin America.
The program was originally housed with the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources State Lands Division in Montgomery, with staff employed by The Nature Conservancy. In 1996, ALNHP moved to Huntingdon College, where it remained until 2005.
ALNHP moved to Auburn University in 2006 and joined the Environmental Institute. At that time, staff employment transitioned from The Nature Conservancy to Auburn University.
Today, ALNHP is part of the Auburn University Museum of Natural History in the Department of Biological Sciences.
