Yohannes Mehari, PhD
Short Bio
I am a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Biological Sciences at Auburn University, where I teach primarily microbiology and cell biology. I am passionate about helping students develop a strong conceptual understanding of biological principles while building practical laboratory and critical-thinking skills.
I earned my bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory sciences from the University of Asmara and completed my PhD in Molecular Biosciences at Middle Tennessee State University in 2016. My academic training and research background in bacterial and fungal biology inform my teaching and allow me to integrate real-world scientific examples into the classroom.
I strive to create an inclusive, engaging learning environment that encourages curiosity, collaboration, and scientific inquiry. Through active learning, clear communication, and mentorship, my goal is to prepare students for careers in the life sciences, healthcare, and research.
Outside the classroom, you will find me either enjoying a cup of hot latte, walking in nature with my wife and our two children and playing, watching and coaching the beautiful game ofsoccer, aka football.

Professional Experience
I am a biology educator with extensive experience teaching large-enrollment undergraduate, graduate and university honors college courses in microbiology, cell biology and introductory biology. I am committed to inclusive, evidence-based, student-centered teaching, curriculum innovation, and the scholarship of teaching and learning using online instruction, active learning, and instructional technology integration.
My courses employ student-centered and inclusive pedagogy emphasizing critical thinking, problem-solving, and real-world relevance. Student engagements and support, particularly in large-enrollment courses, are enhanced by active learning, structured feedback and technology-enhanced instruction.

Engagement
University & Departmental Service
I provide sustained service to the university and department through leadership, advising, and committee work that supports student success and academic quality. I currently serve as the Department of Biological Sciences Learning Assistant Program Coordinator and as a member of the Pre-Professional Advisory Committee. I am also serving as an Honors College Student Advisor, supporting undergraduate honors students in their studies by providing research opportunities. In addition, I have contributed as a teaching peer reviewer and as a member of departmental lecturer search committees, as well as awards committees, contributing to faculty evaluation, hiring and recognition efforts.
Outreach
I actively engage in STEM outreach and educational service that extends beyond the university by supporting student research and science education at the local and state levels. I regularly serve as a volunteer judge for the Alabama Science & Engineering Fair, including serving as a captain in 2024, 2025, 2026and for the Auburn University Research Symposium. I also contribute to instructional and student development initiatives as an AUSSI Facilitator and a Summer Engineering Enrichment Facilitator, helping to promote early engagement, mentorship and access to science education.
