    Innovation

Dr. Ceyhan’s research lies at the intersection of statistical machine learning, network science, and spatial data analysis. He develops graph- and network-based methods for classification, clustering, and pattern recognition, with emphasis on challenging settings such as class imbalance, structural overlap, and high-dimensional or spatially structured data. His foundational work on random geometric graphs—particularly proximity catch digraphs—has advanced both theory and algorithmic methodology for graph-based learning.

A second major research thrust focuses on network optimization under uncertainty, including the Canadian Traveler Problem and the Stochastic Obstacle Scene Problem. Dr. Ceyhan designs traversal algorithms and risk-aware decision frameworks for navigation in stochastic and adversarial environments, supported by NSF and ONR funding. His work integrates stochastic modeling, spatial point processes, Monte Carlo simulation, and optimization theory.

He also contributes to spatial statistics and biomedical data science, developing nearest-neighbor and graph-theoretic tools for spatial point pattern analysis and for modeling complex medical and neuroimaging data. Across these areas, his research blends theoretical development with computational implementation and applied collaborations in ecology, neuroscience, and engineering.

Keywords: statistical machine learning; graph-based learning; random geometric graphs; proximity catch digraphs; network optimization; stochastic traversal problems; spatial statistics; spatial point patterns; adversarial risk analysis; biomedical data analysis.

    Engagement

Dr. Ceyhan has been actively engaged in outreach and community-facing initiatives that promote statistical literacy, data science education, and interdisciplinary engagement. At Auburn University, he has helped organize the ASA AL–MS Chapter Annual Conferences, co-presented at the Outreach and Engaged Scholarship Symposium, and founded the Statistics & Data Science Seminar Series to support cross-campus research dialogue. He also collaborates with local partners such as the Chambers County Health & Wellness Center to advance data-driven public health initiatives.

During his tenure as Deputy Director of SAMSI, Dr. Ceyhan led national outreach efforts—including undergraduate modeling workshops, programs at minority-serving institutions, and professional development events for early-career researchers. He facilitated partnerships with industry and government agencies and contributed to national STEM diversity initiatives (SACNAS, Blackwell–Tapia, Infinite Possibilities). His outreach portfolio further includes international engagement through the Global Young Academy, the New York Academy of Sciences Global STEM Alliance, and service to professional societies and scientific review panels.

    Leadership & Professional Service

Dr. Ceyhan has a distinguished record of professional leadership in the statistics and data science communities. He currently serves as President of the ASA Alabama–Mississippi Chapter, where he supports regional research networks, conference engagement, and student participation. Nationally, he has held editorial appointments with several journals, including Computational Statistics & Data Analysis and the Journal of Statistical Computation and Simulation. Internationally, he has served on the Board of Directors of the International Association for Statistical Computing and as an elected member of the International Statistical Institute. His leadership portfolio also includes service on scientific committees, reviewer panels, and advisory boards for NSF-funded institutes, international societies, and interdisciplinary research initiatives.

    Grants & Current Research Projects

Dr. Ceyhan’s research program is supported by multiple major awards, including NSF Award #2319157 on stochastic obstacle scene modeling and ONR Grant #N00014-22-1-2572 on adversarial risk analysis for optimal navigation.
