Undergraduate Studies

Physics is the most fundamental of the sciences, seeking to understand how the physical universe behaves from the smallest subatomic particles to the largest cosmic structures. The undergraduate physics program at Auburn University combines mathematical reasoning, analytical thinking and experimental techniques to help students explore the laws that govern matter, energy, space and time.

Students develop strong problem-solving skills through coursework, laboratory experience and opportunities to work alongside faculty in active research programs. These experiences prepare graduates for careers in scientific research, engineering, medicine, data science, education and many other fields.

The department’s small faculty-to-student ratio allows undergraduates to work closely with faculty mentors and engage directly with research and advanced instrumentation throughout their studies.

Undergraduate Programs

BS in Physics

The Department of Physics offers a Bachelor of Science degree designed to provide a strong foundation in the core principles of physics while allowing flexibility for students to pursue specialized interests. Students complete coursework in topics such as mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum physics, thermodynamics and computational methods while developing strong mathematical and analytical skills.

The curriculum allows students to tailor their degree through electives that align with their career goals. Many students pursue coursework in areas such as mathematics, engineering, materials science or computer science, while others focus on advanced physics topics in preparation for graduate study

Curriculum

Double Major in Physics

Students may choose to complete a double major by fulfilling the requirements for physics along with those of another academic program. Courses required for the second major may sometimes count toward elective requirements in the physics degree, but a minimum number of credit hours must remain distinct between the two majors.

Double majors allow students to combine physics with fields such as mathematics, engineering or computer science while developing a strong interdisciplinary skill set.

Minor in Physics

A minor in physics provides students from other disciplines the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of physical principles and quantitative problem solving. The minor typically includes coursework in intermediate mechanics, quantum physics and relativity, electricity and magnetism and statistical thermodynamics.

The physics minor complements many majors across Auburn University, particularly those in engineering, mathematics, chemistry and other STEM fields.

As the Undergraduate Program Officer (UPO), Michael Gramlich serves as a key resource for students pursuing degrees in chemistry and biochemistry at Auburn University. The UPO provides guidance on program requirements, course planning and academic opportunities within the department, helping students navigate their undergraduate experience and prepare for the next steps in their academic or professional careers.

Student Experience

Physics majors may participate in student organizations such as the Society of Physics Students (SPS), which provides opportunities for networking, outreach and professional development. SPS activities often include research discussions, community outreach and participation in national competitions and conferences.

 

 

Graduates of the physics program are expected to demonstrate a strong conceptual understanding of fundamental physics concepts, including classical mechanics, electricity and magnetism, quantum mechanics and statistical physics. Students also develop the ability to apply mathematical methods, construct physical models and communicate scientific ideas effectively in both written and oral forms.

Through laboratory courses and research experiences, students learn to design experiments, analyze data and interpret results in order to investigate physical phenomena.

The Department of Physics hosts the Auburn University Undergraduate Space Program (AUUSP), which offers students from across campus the opportunity to participate in hands-on space research and engineering projects. Through the program, students can contribute to high-altitude balloon launches that carry scientific payloads to the edge of space, design and build small satellites for orbital missions and collaborate on student-led projects focused on planetary exploration.
