The Alabama Natural Heritage Program collects, manages and shares scientific information about Alabama’s biological diversity.
Our work focuses on species and ecosystems of conservation concern and supports conservation action, sound stewardship, land-use planning and natural resource management.
What We Do
ALNHP identifies important natural areas across Alabama through inventories of rare plant and animal species, natural communities, and special geological or ecological features.
We maintain biodiversity data in a standardized information management system that helps compile and track information about species taxonomy, distribution, status, biology, population trends and conservation needs. This system also supports monitoring of selected natural communities.
Our work also includes tracking related information such as land ownership and protection, land use and management, and threats to species or their habitats.
ALNHP shares data and other information products for conservation, land-use planning and natural resource management.
Available products and services may include site-specific species lists, GIS data, maps, environmental review letters and species-specific data requests.
Inventories are an important part of ALNHP’s work. These efforts help identify important natural areas and document rare plant and animal species, natural communities, and special geological or ecological features across Alabama.
