Documenting Alabama’s biodiversity to support conservation, research and responsible stewardship
The Alabama Natural Heritage Program documents, tracks and shares information about Alabama’s rare species, natural communities and biodiversity. Housed within Auburn University’s Museum of Natural History in the College of Sciences and Mathematics, ALNHP supports conservation, land management, environmental planning, research and education across the state.
Through field surveys, biological inventories, data management and conservation partnerships, ALNHP helps agencies, researchers, land managers and communities make informed decisions about Alabama’s natural resources.
What We Do
ALNHP collects and manages scientific information about Alabama’s plants, animals and natural communities. The program conducts field-based research, maintains biodiversity data, supports environmental review and works with partners to advance conservation across Alabama.
Rare Species Tracking
ALNHP documents rare, threatened and sensitive plant and animal species across Alabama and maintains information about their locations, habitats and conservation status.
Natural Community Documentation
ALNHP studies Alabama’s natural communities and ecosystems, helping identify important habitats and landscapes that support biodiversity.
Biological Inventories
Through field surveys and site assessments, ALNHP documents species, habitats and ecological conditions across Alabama.
Data and Mapping
ALNHP provides biodiversity data, GIS support and mapping services to inform conservation planning, environmental review, research and land management.
Conservation Support
ALNHP works with agencies, conservation organizations, researchers and land managers to support science-based stewardship of Alabama’s natural resources.
Education and Outreach
ALNHP connects students, professionals and community members with Alabama biodiversity through education, training and public engagement.
Data & Services
Need biodiversity information for a project, review or planning effort? ALNHP provides data and services related to rare species, natural communities, biological inventories, environmental review, GIS mapping and conservation planning.
Requests may include species occurrence information, habitat data, project-specific review, maps or survey support.

Part of a Statewide & National Conservation Network
ALNHP is part of the NatureServe Network, a collaborative group of natural heritage programs and conservation data centers that collect, manage and share biodiversity information. Through this network, ALNHP contributes to a broader understanding of rare species, ecosystems and conservation priorities while maintaining a focus on Alabama’s natural heritage.
